I don't know. "Extreme emotional attachment" sounds out of the
ordinary to me. People generally want to protect their families from
harm; aside from that, perhaps humans in the past were more
prone to extreme emotions, living more exposed to the elements,
to predators. Today "true love" might just be a replacement or
reinterpretation of previous survival-linked emotions. This could also
relate to mental health problems, which seem to increase with
industrialization. On the whole spending time with one's emotions
seems to be a luxury rather than a necessity.

Later, the two people reinterpret those intense sensations as love. A highly dependent person, like someone with borderline personality disorder, who lacks a secure sense of self, will solidly latch onto someone else to feed off of the other person's identity.
