The Singing Senators, headlined by Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, and
including Vermont's James Jeffords, Idaho's Larry Craig, and Missouri's John
Ashcroft, are a well-known band of crooners, not to mention pols.
Clips of the group's songs can be streamed from Senators Ashcroft and
Jeffords' homepages. They sing a mix of country, gospel, and patriotic songs
including I'll Fly Away, God Bless America, and Dig a Little Deeper.
Craig said the group initially formed as something fun to do. "It was a
positive kind of thing for a political image," Craig said. "It was something
different to have senators standing up and singing 'Elvira.'"

The Singing Senators started 1995 with a harmonized rendition of Happy
Birthday for a colleague. Their first official performance, for the Young
Political Leaders of America meeting, followed in October 1995.
They all had prior crooning experience, Craig said, having sung in choirs or
quartets in their "former lives." Senator Ashcroft has written and recorded
his own gospel songs as well.
Fans of the Singing Senators can purchase the 1998 CD they recorded in
Nashville, Tennessee, through the Republican party in each senator's home
state, toward which some of the proceeds go. The bulk of the proceeds go to
the Alzheimer Association's Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute.
A second CD is possible; Craig said the Senators have discussed recording an
album of "exclusively patriotic" songs.
Senator Orrin Hatch also has his own website, marketing his original music
to fans.
