The meme of World Cup football, how bizarre.

Even as a committed person-not-in-the-slightest-bit-interested-in-football,
I find myself strangely drawn to how England are doing, to the point where I
actually watched a whole England game the other day, and found myself
ecstatic that they got through.

So what is it with the world cup that entralls us? (mainly in europe...im
informed its nowhere near as "important" a sporting event in the US as it is
this side of the pond). Is it patriotic fervour, is it simple
competativeness, is it the sense of something big which the whole world can
compete in, even developing nations and countries with sociolical problems
to superpowers...

PLease help, I find myself in the unfortunate position of thinking that
Englands Pride rests with David Beckham, a man with the IQ of a horseradish.
