When I hit the 'join chat' button, I get a big black blank box with a little square in the upper left-hand corner; the square is white with a red square, a green square and a blue triangle in it.

It's not difficult signing onto the IRC server, either by the chat option here, or by using an IRC client downloadable elsewhere.
