Please notice that I deliberately did not quote Descartes* and thus did not misquote anything. Cogita was a bitch, not a dog. Thus the feminising 'a' ending of a neuter noun which shares the stem of the verb used by Descartes (whose Latin was anyway decidedly iffy by Roman standards (he used a bastardised form of medieval Latin hybridised with Old French)). vide:- cogito -are [to turn over in the mind , to think, reflect]; sometimes [to intend, plan]. Hence partic. cogitatus -a -um, [considered, deliberate]; n. pl. as subst. [thoughts, reflections, ideas]. Adv. cogitate, [thoughtfully].
I'd suggest that false modesty is far more obnoxious than arrogance justified by capability. Unfortunately far too few arrogant people have capabilities which begin to approach their arrogance. This is quite explicable due to the observed fact that peoples' perception of their abilities invariably inversely follows their competence.

PS, While Hitler's beliefs might have been "inept" (what does that mean in this context?), he was a quite orthodox Roman Catholic Christian (refer e.g. [ Hermit, FAQ: Hitler the "Good Christian", 2002-03-14 ] ), sharing his beliefs about e.g. the Jews, with most Americans and many English until some time in the 1950s.
*And yes, Descartes signed his name this way, with a terminal "s".
