22:34:37 | Mermaid | do you have any powers at all? like deleting the offending comments or blocking someone from commenting to your posts |
22:34:42 | localroger | What Lucifer is trying to do is potentially much more controlled. |
22:34:51 | Mermaid | what the DiP? |
22:35:02 | Mermaid | thats not Lucifer..thats our own Hermit's idea |
22:35:11 | Mermaid | i feel very strongly against DiP |
22:35:20 | Mermaid | it smacks of bad religion |
22:35:56 | localroger | On K5, I am equivalent to anyone else who saunters on over and registers. Re: here, the reason Hermit can propose DiP is that it's a religion. Religion has its good aspects, and bad. This is one of the bad. |
22:36:15 | Mermaid | If an individual who has engaged in "wrong actions" does not seem contrite, the Virians on the Reconciliation Committee will attempt to persuade the offender to repent. > look at this sentence for example |
22:36:39 | Mermaid | If this is successful the offender will offer a written acknowledgment, expressing that what he or she has done is contrary to the principles of the Church of Virus, that they are sorry for it and intend to behave better in the future. |
22:36:47 | Mermaid | you cant shame people like that! |
22:37:00 | localroger | Yes, it's coercive. Dreadfully so by some readings. But it depends on how you define "worng actions" and "community" whether you really think it's bad. |
22:37:29 | Mermaid | they will never submit to this kind of humiliation...and if you want to humiliate someone like that..with the language and written apology etc...why even have someone like that in the first place..you obviously dont respect them |
22:37:35 | localroger | Mermaid, the shaming is the corrective mechanism. |
22:37:41 | Mermaid | i agree |
22:37:47 | Mermaid | but there are other effective ways to shame |
22:38:14 | Mermaid | you know..when i was a little girl |
22:38:20 | Mermaid | well..not so little |
22:38:33 | Mermaid | when i was in school...i used to work *very* hard to get good grades |
22:38:40 | localroger | I think the mechanisms of the SOF are dependent on deep community interactiveness. As in, without all this other socity around, the survivability of an outcast human was not very good. |
22:38:59 | Mermaid | if i dont get a certain grade that is within my mother's expectation...she will ignore me..completely |
22:39:08 | localroger | You can't get away with that when your members can waltz over to your competitors and join them. |
22:39:12 | Mermaid | you'll be wishing that she'd yell or scold you |
22:39:18 | Mermaid | now..thats shame |
22:39:38 | Mermaid | thats one way of shaming ...the other way is the easy way out..yelling..punishment...etc |
22:39:46 | Mermaid | the former is way more effective than the latter |
22:39:53 | localroger | Well as a child your survivability wouldn't have been too good if your parents had cast you out. |
22:39:59 | Mermaid | whats SOF again? fully? |
22:40:12 | localroger | Society of Friends. |
22:40:27 | Mermaid | right...couldnt place that |
22:40:49 | Mermaid | if we shame people the DiP way...it would become a case of sour grapes |
22:40:57 | localroger | I have Mennonites, who are very similar, among my customers. |
22:41:00 | Mermaid | and you know what all this DiP is for?...etiquette on the bbs |
22:41:21 | Mermaid | language..rudeness...all this for a slightly shitty, ill mannered member of the community |
22:41:22 | localroger | Yes, but online etiquette attains an importance all out of proportion to reality. |
22:41:28 | Mermaid | who, btw, may have other things to offer |
22:41:29 | localroger | As does the lack thereof. |
22:41:42 | Mermaid | you cannot mould a person into what you want them to be...you got to take the package deal |
22:42:21 | Mermaid | people are rude online ..more so than in real life..because...well...because they can and get away with it too |
22:42:27 | localroger | Mermaid, that is Rusty's approach at K5. So far the results are neither promising nor dismal; it's an experiment in progress, which I support. |
22:43:03 | Mermaid | if you 'punish' them...they'd shut off the puter and still get away with it...the net world disappears with an off switch...the only way to make people 'behave' is to offer them something of value |
22:43:09 | localroger | Mermaid you'd probably like the document I wrote > 10 years ago when I quit BBS. I noticed then that it was sucking up all my time, and making me an asshole. |
22:43:14 | Mermaid | that the loss of it would be so devastating that they'd behave |
22:43:27 | Mermaid | ranger: but tell me this..whats the population in k5? |
22:43:40 | Mermaid | url? |
22:44:03 | localroger | I actually removed the modem from my computer, as if that would solve anything. Then this whole Internet thing came along. K5 population is 45,000 users, probably about 10,000 real individuals http://www.kuro5hin.org. |
22:44:54 | Mermaid | lol |
22:45:04 | localroger | If you create an account, you get to vote on stories. It's excruciatingly democratic. |
22:45:22 | Mermaid | we are fifty atm..:) |
22:45:48 | Mermaid | i'd say that given those numbers, your hecklers are rather few |
22:45:59 | localroger | But they are sooooo very annoying. |
22:46:01 | Mermaid | of course, it could be a case of jealousy |
22:48:12 | localroger | Mermaid you should look up a K5 nick RobotSlave, aka Ed Slocomb. He used to be a prime mover at Adequacy.org. He has left at least two dozen posts "deconstructing" thins I've written at great length, in great detail, as malevolently as possible. He's smart and he obviously doesn't have a life. |
22:49:06 | Mermaid | i know people like that... |
22:49:11 | localroger | Lately Ed has moved on to trolling Rusty Foster himself, but if I get active again I know he'll be back. He makes the trolls you have here like A_L_T_O look like Disney Faeries by comparison. |
22:49:11 | Mermaid | maybe you are his experiment |
22:49:20 | Mermaid | lol |
22:50:19 | localroger | I don't hold with the "ignore trolls" school, but I think I have a strategy now that minimizes his interest in me. I won't know whether it really works though until I do something interesting on K5 again. |
22:51:06 | Mermaid | whats the strategy? |
22:52:07 | localroger | I call it "low interest calling out." I don't stalk him, but if I happen to run across a story or comment of his, and I can clearly spot the "linchpin of illogic" behind his troll, I call it out. If everyone did that, he wouldn't be able to troll any more; individually it's not a winning strategy, but universalized it would neutralize him. |
22:52:59 | Mermaid | how many story/comments have you blasted so far? |
