I wrote in one of my earlier posts that:

Quote:
" I agree with Joe to some extent concerning his analysis of Islamic theocratic fascism, but am likely to disagree that preserving secularism and modernity figures greatly in the minds of most Western administrations), but it is surely those viewpoints that have suffered the most in the sniping, largely due to self censorship. "

As illustration, the recent difficulties in the Anglican church (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3130107.stm) have seen many conservatives speaking of how liberalisation would diminish the respect in which the church is held in countires like Nigeria, where they are competing with Islam. It seems to me that such statements suggest a preference for the conservative social norms of Islamic societies and an acceptance of the Islamic views of Western societies as decadent. It reminds me of what many British and American figures said prior to the second world war, where defence of Hitler or Franco was often cited in terms of their role as a bulwark against fascism, but which frequently reflected their admiration for the fascist stress on public order and morals.

It is also why such Christian Fundamentalist froth-at-the-mothers as
Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson blamed the victim, and endorsed the
Fundy Muslim view that God had struck the US because if its fallen
nature.  The difference is, of course, that when their comments became
widely known, they were widely and publicly reviled by the populace at
large and forced to recant and apologize, something that does not
happen with the rabid pronunciamentoes of mad mullahs.
</snip>

Most telling. It would seem that most (religious) Americans find it
impossible to accept that they might have given offence to God. It quite
naturally follows that they could not possibly, therefore, have given
offence to anyone at all. I'm sure the mullahs would have no problem
with that logic at all.

While I suspect admission of offence to be generally difficult to accept, it does seem to me that religions do tend to explain misfortune in terms of retribution. As I recall, some American fundamentalists did indeed react to September 11th by asserting that god had lifted his veil of protection from America for its immorality and lack of faith. Not really any different from explaining the plague as a divine visitation, or to any of the examples Frazier furnished in The Golden Bough. For their part, the mullahs explain the decline of Islamic society as being attributable to a failure to adhere properly to the Koran and to the introduction of Western immorality.

Quite. And herein my brethren, lies the true (IHO) mission of Virus. To
disabuse the world of the notion that it's fate lies beyond the remit of
its own collective volition.
[Blunderov] *

*(Who in spite of his use of the word 'true', claims no affiliation with
'the Spouter of of Lies' ie Saul of Tarsus,** (be sure to lose no
opportunity to confound your Christian acquaintances with this not
inconsequential inconsistency in the whole edifice of so called
"Christianity") or, for that matter, a definitive (or even credible)
interpretation of the words of my brother Kharin.

** for the curious: Google = "Paauline Heresy" eg:

"For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in
among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men
arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them"
(Acts 20:29-30). Heresy, coming from the Greek verb meaning "to choose,"
connotes "a theological choice contrary to norm."

cue Rhinoceros...

Yes well, time to sign off now....

"or the words of my brother Kharin"

I note that such fraternal language has become quite popular of late. On the whole though, I think I'd prefer 'Godfather'
