I've been looking for a way to do that. The problem is that those who
have not yet joined the Meridion system have a reputation of zero.

Maybe the 'Meridionions' are the spawns of Meridion, the new avatar of CoV. Exclusive membership. A set of rules and regulations. A more preveilaged club. The Meridionions can deny the rest of the CoV their valuable opinions, resources, expertise and delectable company.

[Lucifer] I've been looking for a way to do that. The problem is that those who have not yet joined the Meridion system have a reputation of zero.
[rhinoceros] It is a good idea to use what we have for value judgements (I assume that the ratings incorporate cogency, relevance, entertainment, or whatever anyone finds of value).
A first attempt would be to make the rule *not* apply to those with 0 reputation who are not in Meridion, but that would fail because one would be able to be exempt by staying out of Meridion.
I think that the only way it can be done is if everyone is automatically included in Meridion, but then the Meridion would suddenly include more than a thousand of inactive subscribers. So, we may need to make those who have not posted for, say, 1 year invisible in Meridion, and the ratings they have given void.
As a side effect, that would probably give the ratings a shift away from tradition and towards current activity.

So, auto-add to Meridion only if you've posted, and auto-drop from email only if more than 4 people have rated you.

[rhinoceros] The last one is not necessary. The way the system works, as
soon as someone joins Meridion he/she goes from 0 straight to a pretty
heavy 5 (unrated by everyone is same as getting a 5 from everyone). 5 is
the base rating, anything higher is a postitive judgement and anything
lower is a negative judgement. It takes a lot to get far away from 5
either way.
Also, since we don't want to make the BBS our junkyard either, we might
want to forward eveything to a single "purgatory" section ("The Memetic
Wasteland?"), where one has the chance to achieve memetic redemption.

The problem is that the feedback needs to be taken in a way that does

It might be that auto moderation through email just can't get enough

for the story and/or author.
I read the memetics list from both email and the web site. I think
feedback from a large fraction of people skipping certain authors there
would have been effective in discouraging certain annoying posters over the
past year or two. (Traffic on that list is very low lately.)
Email lists and news groups just don't have the face to face social
feedback with which we evolved. It is amazing that we do as well as we do
in such communications.

PS. Sampling for feedback with minimum pain is a widespread engineering
problem. This last week I was working on power supply designs where
reducing the losses in the current feedback resistors was a major problem.
