RE: virus: How to handle lamers? What is off-topic?

Several message boards that I read and post to occaisionally have a system
of "karma points" (yeah, I know...)
The way it works is: you can assign "karma" (positive or negative) to a
certain number of posts per time slice, and to a specific person's posts by
time slice. As your total "positive karma" increases, the amount you can
assign increases and the time slices get smaller. It's fairly database
intensive, but I think it might alleviate some of the problems here.
Consequences of high negative scores could include such things as limiting
post length, or how often that person can post. Specific posts and poster
stats might also show, in the archives, what that person's/post's specific
value is, as judged by the rest of the readers and posters. Positive
feedback?

Perhaps a similar "rationality" score? One could assign, say, 5 points per
day, positive or negative. They could also only assign one per day to one
post by each other person on the list, up to their limit of 5 per day. Their
max per post would start at 1, and as their own rationality score increased,
they would be allowed to give out, say 10 points per day, two per person,
max 2 per post...

Details and implementation would need to be discussed further... so discuss!
;-}

That is a very good idea, and one that could work. I think it would be
some sort of system for adding a disruption point for every unwarrented
insult you throw at another member of the list. If a person does manage
to accumulate the maximum number of disruption points then the rest of the
list should be made to vote on if we should boot him (with 2/3 majority
needed) What do others think of that?
