Those magazines that you find in waiting rooms that you find yourself
reading in spite of the fact that the only reason they got there at all is
because nobody wanted them anyway;
The increasing cacophony of pagers, mobile phones, car alarms and
computer-event related sounds which sound, for just a moment, as if they
might be something to do with you;
Those brochures, leaflets, flyers or whatever that one finds stashed
underneath your windscreen-wiper and which get crumpled up without being
read at all.
The lo-fi Clayderman that they play to you on the switchboard in a futile
attempt to placate you into accepting that the company's convenience is more
important than yours;
Ever push on a door that is clearly marked \pull\? \You\ are a victim of
memetic noise; there are so many signs, notices, injunctions,
advertisements, disclaimers, bulletin boards, hoardings, hawkers, shills,
in-shop radio stations, one-time only offers, fluorescent final-sale
stickers, coupon offers, announcements and so forth that you have become
accustomed to filtering out as much as possible, even to the extent of
ignoring information which is actually relevant to you.
