[Dr. Sebby 1] ...of course, if one were to assume that overpopulation begets desperation and thus poverty, which begets poor education, malnutrition and generalized apathy at one\'s role in the big game, which pretty much begets the proper soil for religious zealotry; one might then reason in a twisted manner that wiping out thousands of children, thus effecting a miniature sort of genocide could actually be a slow remedy to the overpopulation problem. if it werent for the incumbent backlashes of genocide, this might have been a debateable approach!

[Hermit 2] Most of what was once fertile in Africa is now growing nothing but landmines and weeds. Yet the little that remains is producing almost enough food for that sorry continent - except where war and social engineering are still devastating entire populations. In any case, Africa is beginning to depopulate as the AIDS/Hepatitis time-bomb begins to explode. Europe and the US both have mountains of food - and nobody to eat it. Both areas have \"banked\" vast acreages and still \"overproduce.\" Europe\'s population is reducing. The entire CIS has seen negative population growth for ten years. China\'s birth rate is stabilizing and will plateau in 2050-2060. Sure, aided by belief and poverty, South America, Southern Asia, North Africa and the Middle East are still expanding unabated, but eventually, this too will stabilize - particularly as the effects of ground-water overuse and contamination and buildups of salt in irrigated areas take their toll (not to mention the toys of war).

[Hermit 2] Which suggests to me that overpopulation is not the real problem (although the cost of distribution has a lot to do with some poverty), it is I suggest correlative rather than causative. I would suggest that causation is found in the beliefs which lead to tumescent population growth and even more so, those that result in insufficient education and an inability to comprehend cause and effect are to blame.
